APPOINTED

Cynthia Robinson is the new director of the Wisconsin Primate Research Center Library after Larry Jacobsen stepped down in June. Robinson, who received a master’s degree from UW–Madison, previously served as the associate director of the University of Minnesota Bio-Medical Library.

Don Kettl, a professor in the La Follette School of Public Affairs, has been named by Gov. Jim Doyle to co-host a summit on local government finance that convened in Milwaukee today, Wednesday, Dec. 10.


HONORED

David Sorkin, history and Jewish Studies, served as associate editor for The Oxford Handbook of Jewish Studies (Oxford University Press, 2002), which has received the National Jewish Book Award for 2002-03 in the category of scholarship. The award will be received at a ceremony in New York on Dec. 11.

Carolyn Heinrich, Institute for Research on Poverty affiliate and associate professor in the Robert M. La Follette School of Public Affairs, is one of 16 scholars to receive a grant from the IBM Center for the Business of Government for research in performance management. Heinrich has been working with the U.S. Department of Labor to analyze performance data from states’ implementation of the Workforce Investment Act.

Judi Bartfeld, professor of consumer science and Institute for Research on Poverty affiliate, recently was awarded a one-year continuation of her grant from the Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services to study food insecurity in Wisconsin.

Mark Ediger, professor of chemistry received the James W. Taylor Excellence in Teaching Award sponsored by Pharmacia Corp. at a special symposium Dec. 5.

Kim Kutz, Brian Majestic, Sam Pazicni and Patti Schaefer are the winners of the 2002-03 Chemistry Department Teaching Assistant Excellence Awards. The awards, consisting of a certificate of appreciation and a cash award, were presented at the Excellence in Teaching Symposium Dec. 5.

John Wright, professor of chemistry, has been elected as a fellow of the American Physical Society in recognition of his fundamental contributions to the development, understanding and applications of multiresonant four wave mixing methods for electronic and vibrational molecular condensed phase spectroscopy.

Guri Sohi, professor of computer science, has been selected as a fellow Association for Computing Machinery in recognition of his contributions to the field of computer architecture.

Biruté Ciplijauskaité, professor emeritus of Spanish and Portuguese, is editor/author of “Prohibido entrar,” a translation of a book by Nijolé Miliauskaité, published by Sociedad de Cultura Valle-Inclán.

Robert Haveman, Institute for Research on Poverty affiliate and former director, is co-author, along with Andrew Bershadker and Jonathan Schwabish, of “Human Capital in the United States from 1975 to 2000: Patterns of Growth and Utilization,” recently published by the W.E. Upjohn Institute.


OTHER MILESTONES

The UW men’s cross-country team, coached by Jerry Schumacher, added to their Big Ten Title with a regional victory at the NCAA Division I Great Lakes Regional Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. UW’s victory in the 32-team field earned Wisconsin an automatic bid to the NCAA championships in Waterloo, Iowa. The women’s cross-country team, coached by Peter Tegen, placed sixth.

The UW men’s and women’s cross-country teams completed their seasons Nov. 24 at the 2003 NCAA Cross Country Championships in Waterloo, Iowa. The men finished second and the women placed 26th.

Ted Halbach, dairy science senior outreach specialist, and Dave Dickson, emeritus professor of dairy science, coached a team of UW–Madison dairy cattle judges to second place overall at the 2003 Intercollegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Contest, held Nov. 9 at the 2003 North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Ky. Also at the exposition, Halbach coached the Wisconsin 4-H team to third place overall at the Youth Dairy Cattle Judging Contest.
