W. Johnson to reopen by Nov. 21

November 18, 2003

The reconstruction of West Johnson Street and a short stretch of Campus Drive — an inconvenience to campus commuters for months — will soon be over, officials say.

Since June, the thoroughfare has been closed to traffic between North Randall Avenue and Broom Street while crews rebuilt the heavily traveled artery and installed utilities. The construction slowed traffic as commuters altered their routes.

But officials expect the project will be completed and the street will again open to traffic by Friday, Nov. 21, according to Bryan Manning, assistant construction engineer for the city.

During the construction project, West Dayton Street was converted into a one-way eastbound street to help handle some of the traffic flow that was diverted from West Johnson Street. Manning said that city crews will convert West Dayton back into a two-way street, but he warned motorists that the conversion may not take place until early December to allow time for changing traffic signals and pavement markings.
