Honored
Douglas DeBoer, associate professor of veterinary dermatology, School of Veterinary Medicine, recently received the American College of Veterinary Dermatology’s 2003 Award for Excellence based on his outstanding contributions to science and education. The award, established in 1991, is the highest honor that the ACVD can bestow.
Jost Hermand, William F. Vilas Research Professor of German, has been named honorary professor at the Humboldt University in Berlin by the university’s president, and the Berlin Senator for Science and Scholarship.
Mark Johnson, coach, women’s ice hockey, is one of four 2003 inductees into the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame. Johnson helped the men’s hockey team to the 1977 NCAA Championship as a freshman at UW–Madison and is the program’s all-time leading goal scorer.
Jason Yaeger, assistant professor, anthropology, has been named a 2003-2004 National Endowment for the Humanities advanced scholar at the School of American Research in Santa Fe. He will be conducting research on the role of the ancient city of Tiwanaku in the construction of Inka imperial ideology.
The UW–Madison chapter of Phi Kappa Phi recently recognized four members of the faculty and staff by awarding them honorary memberships in Phi Kappa Phi: Yvonne Bowen, assistant dean, College of Letters and Science, chief pre-professional adviser, L&S Advising Center; Deborah Brandt, professor, English; Jenny Saffran, associate professor, psychology; and Steven Zwickel, lecturer, engineering professional development.
A recent video about UW–Madison’s Campus Natural Areas recently won two awards. “University Wild!” earned a silver Telly Award for non-broadcast film and video production and a silver Remi Award from Worldfest-Houston, an annual international competition hosted by the Houston Film Society. The video was produced last year by the Gaylord Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies and Worthwhile Films of Poynette, with financial support from the Brittingham Trust and the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.

Alfred Glauser, professor emeritus of French, died at his retirement home in Saint-Cannat, France, on March 9, 2003. The Department of French and Italian, through the University of Wisconsin Foundation, has established an annual Alfred Glauser Prize for an outstanding graduate student in French.
