Austrian modernism showcased at the Elvehjem Museum of Art

April 23, 2003

The Elvehjem Museum of Art will open an exhibition on Austrian modernism, “Design, Vienna 1890s-1930s,” with a reception at 6 p.m., Friday, April 25. The exhibition follows the development of two Austrian modernist movements, Vienna Secession and Wiener Werkstatte. Begun during the 19th century, the movements span Art Nouveau to Art Deco. More than 100 examples of furniture, paintings, prints, drawings, fabrics, needlework, ceramics, metalwork, glass, small objects and books will testify to the movements’ synthesis of the aesthetic and the practical, and fine and applied arts.

“Design, Vienna” closes Sunday, June 29. Lectures and educational presentations will accompany the exhibition. For a complete schedule, visit the Elvehjem’s Web site at http://www.lvm.wisc.edu.
