Schubert on tap Friday at Mills Hall

February 11, 2003

The Faculty Concert Series at the School of Music will present a complete rendition of Schubert’s song cycle “Die schöne Müllerin” on Friday, Feb. 14, at 8 p.m. in Mills Hall. Baritone Paul Rowe and pianist Martha Fischer perform Schubert’s settings of 20 poems by Wilhelm Müller.

The performance will be enhanced with projected images by photographer Katrin Talbot of Madison. The photographs were taken in Holland, Germany and Wisconsin specifically for this performance. The approximately 140 images depict mills, and their water wheels and stones, some dating from ancient times. Other photos convey a young man and woman in expressions suggesting ardent affection, melancholy and resignation.

“Die schöne Müllerin” concerns a young apprentice miller who falls in love with his master’s daughter.

Tickets for the Faculty Concert Series may be purchased in advance through the Wisconsin Union Theater Box Office, 262-2201. Individual tickets: $8, general; $6, seniors and non-UW-Madison students; free, UW–Madison students with valid student ID. Tickets may be purchased at the lobby beginning 45 minutes prior to the concert.
