Peter van Kan was promoted from assistant professor to associate professor in kinesiology during the summer.

Chris Clark, head coach, men’s rowing team, was named the 2002 Men’s Heavyweight Coach of the Year by the Eastern Association of Rowing College Coaches.

David Noyce, assistant professor, civil and environmental engineering, has been selected to receive the D. Grant Mickle Award. This award is given each year by the Transportation Research Board for the best paper in the area of operation, safety and maintenance. Noyce’s paper is entitled “Drivers’ Understanding of Simultaneous Traffic Signal Indications in Protected Left-Turns.”

Yi-Fu Tuan, J.K. Wright and Vilas Research Professor Emeritus of Geography, has been named a Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar for 2002-03. He is one of 14 scholars selected by the Phi Beta Kappa national academic honor society. Tuan will visit eight universities and colleges throughout the year, spending two days at each. He will meet with undergraduates, participate in classroom lectures and seminars, and give major addresses to the academic community at each institution.
