Brey and O’Riley to perform at Union Theater

Carter Brey, cello, and Christopher O’Riley, piano, will present an exciting program of cello sonatas on Saturday, Nov. 23, at 8 p.m. in the Wisconsin Union Theater.

Works to be performed include Prokofiev’s Sonata in C Major, Op. 119, as well as sonatas for cello and piano by Carter and Poulenc. This collaboration of two accomplished solo musicians results in what The San Diego Tribune has called “a worthy partnership – energetic, committed and musically opinionated.”

Both Brey and O’Riley have strong interpretive skills and amazing technique. Performing together, they infuse the works they play with fresh ideas and creative energy. Cello and piano play equally remarkable roles in the fascinating drama that unfolds when they share the stage. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch has said, “As a chamber music ensemble, Brey and O’Riley fit together like a tight glove.”

The duo, who have performed previously in the Wisconsin Union Theater, recently released a CD titled “Le Grand Tango.”

Brey, principal cellist of the New York Philharmonic since 1996, is well-known for his virtuosity, flawless technique and total musicianship. Celebrated as both a soloist and ensemble player, Brey has been described as “a thoughtful musician with a beguilingly rich tone” by The New York Times, while The Kansas City Star has praised his keen interpretive sense and depth of musical understanding.

O’Riley, acclaimed as “one of the most interesting pianists playing today” by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, has delighted audiences with a wide repertoire of music, from Renaissance motets to cutting-edge new music, while his unique interpretations of standard literature for the piano have made him a favorite guest of orchestras throughout the world. In addition to his busy touring schedule, O’Riley hosts “From the Top,” a weekly program on Public Radio International that showcases the vibrant performances and personalities of young musicians.

Brey and O’Riley appear at the Wisconsin Union Theater under the sponsorship of the Wisconsin Union Directorate Performing Arts Committee. The Norman Bassett Foundation provides additional support. Promotional support is provided by Wisconsin Public Radio.
