New parking signs to be installed

August 13, 2002

Transportation Services will replace campus parking signs beginning Wednesday, Aug. 21, in an effort to make parking lots more user-friendly.

New signs became necessary when the university consolidated lot enforcement times from 23 to four. In the past, the wide range of enforcement times confused some motorists. Now, all lots will fall under one of four categories, with signs that will read:

  • Permit required at all times.
  • Permit required Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
  • Meters enforced Monday-Saturday, 7 a.m.-10 p.m.
  • Permit required at all times, any lot permit valid Monday-Friday, 4:30 p.m.-7 a.m. and all day Saturday and Sunday.

The signs will be posted on both sides of lot entrances to make it easier for motorists to determine parking restrictions before entering lots. However, no permit signs will be posted inside lots, so motorists should be sure to check parking restrictions upon entering a lot. The sign changes will not affect disabled, flex or other special parking restrictions posted at some stalls.

The signposts will fit into metal sleeves that will be permanently buried in the ground. The design makes signposts easier and less expensive to replace and makes it possible to replace signs during the winter when the ground is frozen.

The total number of parking signs on campus will be reduced from 441 to 363, since fewer parking signs are needed under the simplified system. All signs will be in place when new enforcement times become effective Sept. 3.
