Elevators get a lift
The university will repair three of the four elevators in Memorial Union, estimated at a total project cost of $493,000, using program revenue. Installed in 1928 and 1938, the elevators have not been refurbished since they were installed, other than routine maintenance.

Spring football game is free
Catch the Badger football team in action this spring as they prepare for the 2002 Big Ten season. Attend the annual UW Spring Football game on Saturday, April 20th. Kickoff is set for noon at Camp Randall Stadium. Admission is free.

No bologna: Butch’s last bash
Palmer “Butch” Strickler’s final Bologna Bash is Saturday, April 20. The event starts following the spring football game. Proceeds benefit Wisconsin Athletics.

Waisman director to retire
Terrence R. Dolan, professor of neurology and psychology, will retire May 24 from UW–Madison, where he has been director of the Waisman Center for 20 years. The Waisman Center encompasses a broad range of research, training, service and outreach programs related to human development, developmental disabilities and neurodegenerative diseases. Under Dolan’s direction, the Waisman Center has become known for significant research accomplishments and substantial growth, according to Graduate School Dean Martin Cadwallader. In March, Dolan returned from a 14-month leave of absence in Saudi Arabia where he headed up the development of a new research center on childhood diseases. His future plans include a new position in the private sector, as well as occasional travel to the Middle East to oversee the continued development of the research center.

Bunce remembered
Friends and colleagues plan to celebrate the life of the former director of the Kohler Art Library, Bill Bunce, who died Feb. 23. The event is Wednesday, May 1, 3:30 p.m., Alumni Lounge, Pyle Center.

Cardinal lauded
The Daily Cardinal student newspaper received eight Mark of Excellence awards from the Society of Professional Journalists April 5, including Best All-Around Daily Student Newspaper.

3 receive Sloan Fellowships
Three faculty members have been named fellows by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Amy J. Barger, an assistant professor of astronomy; Philip A. Haile, an assistant professor of economics; and Shannon S. Stahl, an assistant professor of chemistry, are among 104 young scientists and economists in the United States and Canada to receive the highly competitive fellowships. The program encourages research of young scholars at a critical time in their careers with a grant of $40,000.

Scientist named to NOAA
Emeritus professor and research scientist Donald R. Johnson has been appointed special project scientist for the National Centers for Environmental Prediction within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Johnson is a highly regarded scientist specializing in diagnostic analysis and numerical modeling of the atmosphere. NCEP has asked him to work with models used in forecasting weather and climate.
