‘Journey to Selma: Bridge to Freedom’ rolls in May
UW–Madison students may apply to attend “Journey to Selma,” a 10-day educational service trip to Selma, Ala., May 31-June 9.
A 15-member group will work on the National Voting Rights Museum and Institute’s renovation and education projects, participate in group-learning around local history and current issues, and take part in discussions and reflective activities with the local community.
The University Health Services Campus Community Partnerships Team organized the trip as a follow-up to last year’s successful Freedom Ride. On that trip, members of the Selma community expressed interest in continuing the working relationship with UW–Madison.
Stephanie King, Campus Community Partnerships community service coordinator, says the Journey to Selma will be an invaluable experience. “Students will plant the seeds for a sustainable relationship with the Selma community and gain inspiration and skills to bring back to Madison,” King says. “They’ll participate in a shared experience that will positively affect campus climate, diversity education and community involvement.”
Participants may be able to receive academic credit for participating in the trip. A $200 fee includes travel, lodging, meals and group expenses. The deadline is Thursday, April 11. For details and an application, contact King, (608) 265-4163.
