Union galleries join citywide photo exhibition

Nationally acclaimed photographer Keith Carter’s work is on display through Sunday, March 31, in the Porter Butts Gallery in Memorial Union.

Concurrently, the work of local photography collective f5 will be exhibited in the Class of 1925 and Theater galleries at the Union, also through Sunday, March 31.

Both exhibits are part of Madison Photofest, a citywide biennial celebration of photography sponsored by the Center for Photography in Madison. The Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission, the Madison Community Foundation and the Overture Foundation provided additional funding.

Carter, born in Madison but raised in Beaumont, Texas, is praised for turning the mundane into the breathtaking. He says it is “the ragged edges of the human psyche” and the “small askew moments” that entice and inspire him. His pieces convey his love of the ordinary, which through his photographs, becomes extraordinary.

The photographic works by f5, a group of five Madison-area women photographers, are exhibited together. The group expands perceptions about photography by pushing the limits of materials, experimenting with alternative processes and presentations, and exploring personal and universal themes.

Both exhibits are coordinated by the Wisconsin Union Directorate Art Committee.
