Gallery offers ‘A Child’s View’

March 8, 2002

Visitors may explore early childhood education next month at the Gallery of Design in the School of Human Ecology.

Art on display March 15-22 includes the work and experiences of young scholars and their teachers, including portfolios created for families with infants, toddler and preschoolers. The art work and storyboards capture the creativity, learning and skill development of those served by campus child-care centers.

Visitors may view the art and project work at a program Wednesday, March 20, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Gallery of Design, 70 Human Ecology Building, 1300 Linden Drive.

Experts will discuss the role of early education and child care in the teaching and research mission of the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Robin Douthitt, School of Human Ecology dean, will introduce scheduled guests:

  • Seth Pollak, assistant professor in psychology, psychiatry and pediatrics; investigator, Waisman Center, will discuss current research projects focusing on emotional development in young children and his work within campus early education programs.
  • Julie Poehlmann, assistant professor in human development and family studies, will share her work with extending the teaching mission of campus child care through internships, observation and student-family matches.

Those planning to attend the program should contact Lynn Edlefson, campus child-care coordinator, by March 13, at (608) 262-9715.

The Gallery of Design is open Tuesday-Friday 11 a.m.-4 p.m., Sunday 1-4 p.m.
