WSUM on the air
Students at WSUM, shown here “netcasting” over the Internet (as they have since 1997) are now on the air. With a flip of a switch Friday, Feb. 22, WSUM-FM 91.7 completed the university’s long journey toward broadcast student radio. At 2:22 p.m., the station began broadcasting, marking the first time a licensed UW–Madison station has transmitted over the FM band. The station, offering a mix of local, underground and alternative music along with UW–Madison news, sports and talk, is based in The Towers, 602 State St. Its 403-foot, 5,600-watt broadcast tower is located in rural Dane County.
