Forum to examine war on terrorism

The International Institute will hold a forum on terrorism entitled “The War on Terrorism: Lessons Learned? Challenges Ahead,” Thursday, Jan. 24.

The event is scheduled 4-6 p.m., 3650 Mosse Humanities.

The free public forum is part of the Institute’s ongoing commitment to address issues raised by events surrounding the attacks of Sept. 11. The forum, to be introduced by UW–Madison’s new dean of international studies, Gilles Bousquet, will examine foreign and domestic policy issues raised in the wake of last fall’s terrorist attacks and the war in Afghanistan.

Speakers, their talk titles or topics include:

  • Hemant Shah, professor of journalism and mass communication, ethnic studies, “Journalism and the War on Terrorism.”
  • Bernard Trujillo, law professor, “Immigrants’ Rights and Civil Rights Since Sept. 11.”
  • Joseph Elder, professor of sociology and director of the Center for South Asia, will discuss Afghanistan and South Asia.
  • Kathryn Hendley, professor of law and political science, will discuss democracy building and the rule of law.

Faculty members will give brief opening remarks, but the remainder of the forum will be devoted to a question and answer session with the audience.

The forum will also be available online the day after the forum.
