Press publishes chapbook from poet Genoways
Poet Ted Genoways evokes the stark loneliness and hard-scrabble survival of life in early 20th-century Klondike in “Anna, washing,” the latest release from the Parallel Press.
A chapbook is a small-format literary work, usually of poetry or essays. The chapbooks are published by the Parallel Press, an imprint of the UW–Madison libraries. In this 16-piece collection, Genoways imagines the life of two Finnish immigrants to the Klondike in 1897. “Anna, washing” was inspired by Genoways’s travels to Alaska in 1996, where he visited the village Eagle, along the Yukon River.
Each Parallel Press chapbook is $10; annual subscriptions for six are $50. Titles may be ordered from Parallel Press, 372 Memorial Library, 728 State St., Madison, WI 53706. Information: 262-2600.
Class recalls Sept. 11
Journalism 417 a magazine writing class, has created a special edition of the Web-based magazine, Online Wisconsin. The issue, entitled “A Campus Reacts,” is devoted entirely to the campus response to the Sept. 11 attacks on America and the war on terrorism. Its mission is to provide readers with a balanced and engaging portrait of the UW–Madison campus in the context of a nation at war.
The stories on the Web site, http://www.journalism.wisc.edu/j417, were reported and written by students and focus solely on campus circumstances, changes and emotions surrounding the attacks. Stories include topics such as the treatment of women in Afghanistan, changing classroom environment, free speech on campus, and the current and historical status of antiwar protests.
