Tree sale moved near Dairy Barn

November 19, 2001 By John Lucas

The annual Forestry Club Christmas tree sale has been relocated to an open area north of the old UW Dairy Barn, 1915 Linden Drive, just east of the Veterinary Medicine Building.

The sale will be Friday, Nov. 30, 8 a.m.-8 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 1, 8 a.m.-8 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 2, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. More than 550 Fraser fir, Balsam fir and white pine trees will be available ranging from $25-$45, depending on size. Fraser fir wreaths will be sold for $16. All proceeds benefit summer camps and field trips for student forestry clubs.

The sale will be held under a tent in an outdoor area between the barn and the Dairy Forage Research Center, a few hundred yards west of the Stock Pavilion, the former sale site. Tree shoppers can access the site, which will be marked with signs, from Linden Drive.

Parking rules will be relaxed to allow patrons to park temporarily on the sides of the road or in nearby lots while shopping. There is no access to the old Dairy Barn area from Campus Drive.

The sale was moved to allow workers to remove the sawdust floor from the Stock Pavilion and sanitize the facility. University Health Services officials suspect that the floor may have played a factor in the spread of an October infection of E. coli bacterium.

The E. coli investigation is expected to be completed within the next few weeks. Based on the results, UW–Madison administrators will formulate a policy for the Stock Pavilion’s future use. Until then, events planned for the pavilion will continue to be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
