New scholarship to aid women older than 45

A new scholarship, funded by a Madison-area woman who returned to college as an adult, will help women older than 45 attend UW–Madison.

Applications for the Alma Baron Second Chance for Women Scholarship will be available in January, and the deadline to apply is March 1 for fall 2002. The scholarship is for $1,000 and is renewable for up to five years.

“This is an exciting time to be a woman returning to school,” said Pat Fessenden, assistant dean, and director of Adult and Student Services in the Division of Continuing Studies. “The Second Chance for Women Scholarship is one more way UW–Madison is reaching out to make its resources more available to everyone in our community.”

Baron returned to UW–Madison to complete her degree after a lengthy interruption in her education. She is now an emeritus professor in the Executive Education Program at the School of Business.

An applicant must be a woman older than 45 who will enroll in six or more credits in 2002-03 at UW–Madison as an undergraduate, graduate or professional student. The recipient will be chosen on the basis of financial need and potential for academic success based on career or other experience.
