Web portal organizes information for students

November 1, 2001 By Brian Rust

The “My UW–Madison” Web portal service will be made available starting in November to continuing students at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. The online service provides an individualized view of campus information in a friendly, secure, Web-based format.

The MyUW resources will include one-stop access to Web-based e-mail, announcements, campus phone book, information, event listings, the student’s personal calendar, the campus online library catalog, financial aid information and the student’s records.

Users only need access to a Web browser to check this customized information.

“I especially like the easy access to information such as grades, course lists and calendar,” says Jeff Rose, a UW–Madison freshman. “The links to course e-reserves, e-mail center and MADCAT are all very convenient features and I’m sure [MyUW] will catch on.”

Rose and other new students were introduced to the portal during the Summer Orientation, Advising and Registration (SOAR) program.

Students can add or delete “views” for each section of the portal according to their needs. Students can use My UW–Madison, for example, to e-mail professors, reserve library books, check the weather or check the status of financial aid applications.

“Since the start of school My UW has been very useful,” says Joshua Blasi, a UW–Madison student. “Web site student and department searches are made easy and convenient at the click of a button.”

To set up and use My UW–Madison, students can go to http://my.wisc.edu and log in with their NetID and password. The NetID is the user name that appears to the left of the @students.wisc.edu (WiscWorld) e-mail address. The password is the one used to check WiscWorld email.

My UW–Madison comes with 24-hour Help Desk support, 264-HELP.

DoIT expects to add My UW–Madison views for faculty and staff in spring 2002.
