Armed forces to see Badgers
Big Ten football games televised by ABC/ESPN are available live or on a delayed basis to soldiers stationed overseas and aboard Navy ships. This past weekend’s ESPN-televised Wisconsin-Illinois game, for example, was broadcast live to Armed Forces Network — Atlantic. The Big Ten Conference for some time now has had a relationship with the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service.

Wisconsin’s next home game, with Michigan State Saturday, Oct. 27, is on ESPN Regional at 11:10 a.m.

E-cards now available
You can now e-mail anyone any photo in the Athletic Department Web data base as an e-card. To send a card, click on the photo gallery button on the front page at http://www.uwbadgers.com. Use the pull-down menu to choose the sport and person, then click on the highlighted “send as ecard.” Fill out the form, and the e-card is on the way. You can even choose the background and color for the message.

Volleyball athlete honored
Lizzy Fitzgerald set the Badgers to two wins over top-25 ranked teams last weekend and led the Badgers to sole possession of first place in the conference. The 6-foot-1-inch Fitzgerald had 48 assists against 10th-ranked Penn State and a match-high five blocks, including two solos. Against 11th-ranked Ohio State, she had 37 assists and tied for match-high honors with 12 digs.

Basketball season coming up
The Badger men’s and women’s basketball seasons get under way next month. The first women’s game is Sunday, Nov. 4, at 3 p.m., when UW plays host to the Wisconsin AAU select team. The men’s first game is Saturday, Nov. 10, with the California All-Stars.

Screen saver available
Fans attending the Michigan State football game Saturday, Oct. 27, will receive a UW Athletics screen saver after the game while supplies last, courtesy of Ameritech SBC. The screen saver features historic photos, live game updates, schedules and much more.

Web site sets record
Wisconsin athletics’ Web site continues to set records this fall. On Oct. 6, the site had 19,788 visits from 9,169 unique visitors, the largest single day log file ever. In addition, there were 303,481 page views. Last month the site set an all-time one-month record with 1.8 million page views.

McDonald arranges Mideast lectures
David McDonald, special assistant to the chancellor for athletics and history professor, has volunteered to arrange some lectures for the athletic department staff on the Middle East. “The challenges facing the country have brought us all face to face with a part of the world we know little about,” McDonald says. “In order to help make the picture a little clearer, I thought it might make sense to invite some of my colleagues on campus to give short talks on the Middle East and Central Asia.” The first such lecture was Oct. 19 with David Morgan, a specialist on the history of Central Asia, including Afghanistan. Experts on Islam, the Middle East and McDonald’s own lecture on how international diplomacy has changed since Sept. 11 will be future topics.
