Afro-Latin musician Santos visits UW-Madison
The traditions and future of Afro-Latin music will be explored through three university-community events with musician John Santos April 26-27.
Santos, who will be Arts Institute Interdisciplinary Artist in Residence at the UW–Madison in spring 2002, is founder and director of the San Francisco-based Machete Ensemble and a Stanford Jazz Workshop faculty member. The events are:
- A free public lecture, “The Roots of Latin Music” Thursday, April 26, 3:30 p.m., 1321 Humanities Building, 455 N. Park St.
- A free public workshop/demonstration with three Afro-Cuban musicians: Santos, Cuban flautist, composer and arranger Orlando “Maraca” Valle, and visiting Tinker professor Roberto Vizcaino, Friday, April 27, 1 p.m., Luther’s Blues, 1401 University Ave.
- A performance by Valle and his group Otra Vision, with special guests John Santos and Roberto Vizcaino, Friday, April 27, 8 p.m., Orpheum Theatre, 216 State St. Tickets: $18 advance ($20 day of show); $15 students. Call (608) 255-8755 for ticket information.
The events are co-sponsored by Latin American, Caribbean and Iberian Studies, the School of Music, the Arts Institute, and PANA Productions, in conjunction with the “Sin Fronteras: Building Bridges between the Caribbean and African Diaspora Project” with support from Madison Children’s Museum and Wisconsin Arts Board.
