Associate dean of students finalists to visit campus
Five finalists for the associate dean of students position will visit with students and others on campus this week, beginning today, April 17, officials say.
During the visits, each finalist will give a short presentation on current issues in student affairs and student life, followed by a question-and-answer period.
Each candidate will appear at two events. Campus forums open to students, faculty and staff are scheduled in the Multicultural Student Center Lounge in the Red Gym, 716 Langdon St. Open interviews for students only will be held in Memorial Union, 800 Langdon St. Check Today in the Union for room location. The event will be listed as “ASM Associate Dean Session.”
Here are the finalists and their schedules:
- Connie Schroeder, project assistant at Creating a Collaborative Learning Environment project at WW-Madison. Schroeder also is a former associate dean of students at Beloit College. Student interview, Tuesday, April 17, 5-6 p.m. Open forum, Wednesday, April 18, 11-noon.
- Douglas Samuels, associate dean, University of Vermont Law School, Burlington, Vt. Samuels also is former director of Residential Life at Johnson State College, Johnson, Vt. Student interview, Thursday, April 19, 4:30-5:30 p.m. Open forum, Friday, April 20, 11-noon.
- Tammy Gocial, associate dean of students, Webster University, St. Louis, Mo. Gocial also is a former wellness programs coordinator at Maryville University, St. Louis. Student interview, Monday, April 23, 4:30-5:30 p.m. Open forum, Tuesday, April 24, 10-11 a.m.
- Jean Chagnon, psychologist at Heart and Soul Counseling and Consultation, Northfield, Minn. Chagnon is a former wellness center director at Carleton College, Northfield. Student interview, Wednesday, April 25, 4:30-5:30 p.m. Open forum, Thursday, April 26, 10-11 a.m.
- Janice Sheppard, assistant dean of students, UW–Madison. Sheppard also is former Student Organizations Office director at UW–Madison. Student interview, Monday, April 30, 4:30-5:30 p.m. Open forum, Tuesday, May 1, 10:30-11:30 a.m.
A search and screen committee conducted a national search and has recommended the finalists to Dean of Students Alicia Chávez. Committee membership was divided between faculty, academic staff and students.
The associate dean of students plays a leadership role in student services and helps foster a campus climate that addresses the concerns of students of all backgrounds.
A new associate dean is expected to be named by the end of the spring semester. Roger Howard, who currently holds the post, is retiring.
