Union remodeling begins today
Findorff Construction will begin demolition work Monday, March 5, as the remodeling of the Memorial Union kitchen gets under way.
The food preparation operations have been moved to Union South, 227 N. Randall Ave., and food service in Lakefront Cafe has been suspended during the remodeling.
Food Service Director Julie Vincent says the initial work includes asbestos abatement.
“It will probably be a week or so before the real noise starts,” Vincent says.
While no food will be served in Lakefront Cafe, other food service will be available and the cafe will be open for overflow traffic from the Rathskeller until 2:30 p.m. each weekday. The Rathskeller will open every day of the week for breakfast while Lakefront is closed.
The Wisconsin Union operates seven other restaurants and delis around campus, Vincent added. These include The Red Oak Grill, Einstein’s and Quick Byte Deli in Union South; the Blue Chip Deli in Grainger Hall; Ingraham Deli in Ingraham Hall; the ICU Deli in the Medical Sciences Center, and the Feed Bag Deli in the Veterinary Medicine Building.
Lakefront Cafe, which was built in 1957 to maximize the view of Lake Mendota, is expected to reopen in summer 2002.
