Regina Carter Quintet to jazz up Union Theater

February 13, 2001

Touted by The New York Times as “violinist of great control, improvisational flexibility and wide range,” Regina Carter is one of the most significant, versatile and innovative violinists to emerge on the jazz scene in decades.

She will perform in Madison for the first time on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 8 p.m. at the Wisconsin Union Theater.

Hailing from Detroit, Regina Carter is a consummate artist and virtuoso who has worked with artists like Lauryn Hill, Max Roach, Mary J. Blige, Steve Turre, Aretha Franklin and Billy Joel.

She won critical acclaim for her solos on Wynton Marsalis’ “Blood On The Fields” tour and Cassandra Wilson’s recent “Travelin’ Miles” concert at Lincoln Center.

Similar enthusiasm has been sparked for Carter’s work leading her own band. Carter’s exhilarating Verve Records follow-up to “Rhythms of the Heart” further affirms her voice as a leader, a rare original with an unparalled ability to integrate the finer elements of jazz, funk, African, Brazilian and soul music with an adventurous rhythmic sensibility.

Carter appears at the Wisconsin Union Theater under the sponsorship of the Wisconsin Union Directorate Performing Arts Committee. Promotional support is provided by WORT-FM.
