Campus highlights international opportunities

The university is hosting special events in February to highlight many opportunities for international study, travel, service and employment generated from the campus.

“Many students on campus, both US and international, are interested in working in an international capacity upon graduation,” says Susan Huber Miller, who is coordinating the activities. “But many may not be aware of what they need to do or the resources that are available that can help them achieve this goal.”

To assist those students, the first annual International Opportunities Awareness Month has scheduled a series of events specifically geared toward identifying international experiences and careers with a global focus.

Huber Miller, assistant director of the Center for International Business Education and Research at the School of Business, says many units on campus plan to host events to explain their programs and discuss opportunities for students to get involved and gain international experience.

The kickoff event, “So You Want To Work Internationally – Are You Ready?” will be 6-8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, in Morgridge Auditorium of Grainger Hall. Keynote speaker Roger Axtell is noted for his entertaining and informative presentations on working with other cultures. He is a UW regent, former vice president of worldwide marketing for Parker Pen, and the author of books on the “dos and taboos” of working and traveling abroad.

Following Axtell’s address, students will hear from two panelists with work experience in central and eastern Europe. The event is geared toward students who are interested in working globally, and will be followed by a reception in the Grainger Hall atrium.

On Tuesday, Feb. 6, graduate students will have the chance to meet and discuss the ins and outs of working in Europe from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. in 4151 Grainger Hall. Panelists are Amy Houpt Medearis, vice president and Europe analyst at the G7 Group, a Washington-based global analysis and consulting firm, and Serge Bushman, president and founder of Rosetta Mobile Inc., who has worked in Russia as an investment officer for several organizations

Both events are sponsored by CIBER, and the Business Career Center, in cooperation with the Center for Russia, East Europe and Central Asia and the European Studies Alliance.
