Award season again
The three major recognition programs for campus employees are now accepting nominations. Here are details on each:
Seven awards in five categories recognize excellence by academic staff members. Nomination deadline: Jan. 26. Send to the Secretary of the Academic Staff, 270 Bascom. Information: Colleen McCabe, Secretary of the Academic Staff, 263-2985.
The Classified Employee Recognition Award is a campuswide recognition program open to all classified staff. Nomination deadline: Feb. 16. Send to the Classified Personnel Office, 228 A.W. Peterson. Information: 262-3233. Web site.
The Distinguished Teaching Awards committee encourages the nomination of any exceptional distinguished teacher, regardless of specialty or rank. Nomination deadline: Jan. 22. SECC raises $2.5 million
The 2000 State, UW and UWHC Combined Campaign of Dane County has raised more than $2.5 million to date – 107 percent of the goal of $2.35 million – making it the most successful since the annual workplace campaign for charity began in 1973.
On the university side, 3,717 employees, or about 27 percent of eligible donors, contributed a total of $1,044,681. An additional $433 was raised through special events.
At UW Hospital and Clinics, 574 of the 3,900 eligible givers, or about 15 percent, contributed just over $95,500 to the campaign. On the state agency side, the participation rate was 47 percent. Contributions totaled $1,383,013 and special events took in an additional $46,575. The seven-week campaign officially ended on Dec. 1.
Agricultural editor Sorenson dies at 76
Douglas D. Sorenson, 76, agricultural editor and former professor of agricultural journalism, died Dec. 17 at Oakwood Village health care center in Madison.
Sorenson worked at Wisconsin Agriculturist 1956-64. He became an assistant professor of agricultural journalism in 1964. Sorenson taught courses in advertising and technical writing, and studied factors influencing knowledge of technical soil concepts by farmers.
Memorials may be made to the Douglas Sorenson Scholarship Fund at the University of Wisconsin Foundation, 1848 University Ave., Madison, WI 53708; or the Sorenson Professional Development Fund at the UW-Eau Claire Foundation.
GUTS seeks volunteer tutors
GUTS Tutorial seeks volunteers for conversational English tutoring that matches native English-speaking tutors with international students who want to improve their English skills and learn about American culture. Information: 263-5666.
