October 25, 2000

Treasury Secretary Lawrence H. Summers will speak about “U.S. Challenges in the New Economy” Thursday, Nov. 2, at 3:30 p.m. in the State Historical Society Auditorium, 816 State St.

For many years before he assumed his post as secretary of the treasury in July 1999, Summers was highly regarded internationally as an economist. Rubin, playing a leading role in the department’s work on issues related to international economic and financial policy, tax policy, the nation’s financial system, domestic policy and enforcement. From 1993-95, Summers served as under secretary of the treasury for international affairs.

Before that, Summers served as vice president of development economics and chief economist of the World Bank from 1991-93. From 1983-93, he was a professor of economics at Harvard University. Summers served as domestic policy economist on the President’s Council of Economic Advisers in 1982-83. From 1979-82, he was on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology economics department faculty.

Summers has received numerous awards, and written extensively on economic analysis and policy.

Summers’ visit is being sponsored jointly by the Center for World Affairs and the Global Economy, a member program of the International Institute, and the Center for International Business and Research of the School of Business.
