New banners to mark Homecoming
State Street and the Capitol Square will soon be decked in red and white.
Installation will begin at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday of 210 University of Wisconsin–Madison Homecoming banners on poles lining State Street and the Capitol Square. City workers, beginning at Lake Street, are expected to finish the project by midday Wednesday.
The display, originally proposed by Vince Sweeney, associate director of athletics, is a joint project between the city and the campus athletic program.
The project is designed to “spruce the place up and send a message that Homecoming is a fun time,” says Sweeney program assistant Jerry Dowden.
The 13-inch by 42-inch banners will alternate red and white and will feature either Bucky Badger or the university’s “W” insignia. Banners will remain on through October. Homecoming week is Oct. 15-21.
