Appointed
Tony Bennett, former men’s basketball manager and son of men’s basketball coach Dick Bennett, has been hired as assistant coach for the Badgers.

Denny Carey, director of recreational programs for the Division of Recreational Sports, has been appointed to a three-year term on the Editorial Board for the Journal of the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association.

Karen Hanson of Student Records and Mary Hillstrom of Financial Aid have been named to positions on higher education product advisory groups that provide client product-related feedback to PeopleSoft, the Integrated Student Information System software vendor.

Erika Lang-Montgomery, former University of Southern California assistant, became assistant women’s basketball coach.

Peter Quimby started work in July as assistant dean for Chadbourne Residential College, a new position that includes overseeing the Pathways to Excellence Project.

Benjy Wilber, former assistant director of compliance at the University of Utah, has been hired as a compliance specialist.

Anthony R. Ives, associate professor of zoology and entomology, has co-edited a book with Michael Hockenberg. The book is “Parasitoid Population Biology” (Princeton University Press, 2000).

Honored
Edward Aguado, professor of geography, and co-author James E. Burt won the textbook excellence award in physical sciences from the Text and Academic Authors Association for their “Understanding Weather and Climate” (Prentice Hall, 1999).

Tausif Alam, associate scientist in the Medical School’s Department of Surgery, received a grant of 200,000 Swiss franks (about $140,000) from the Roche Organ Transplantation Research Foundation to study an insulin gene therapy based treatment of Type I diabetes.

Barry Alvarez, football coach, received the Victor Award as the college coach of the year. Editors of Sport magazine nominated him.

Dick Bennett, men’s basketball coach, received the Ripon College Distinguished Alumni Citation.

David R. Bohnhoff, associate professor of biological systems engineering, won the Henry Giese Structure and Environment Award for advancing the science and knowledge of post-frame building design and construction.

Thomas Brunold, professor of chemistry, won the Theodor Kocher Award from the University of Bern for an alumnus who exhibits outstanding potential in an academic career.

Robin Chapman, professor emerita of communicative disorders and psychology, received the 1999 Posner Poetry Award for her book “The Way In” (Tebot Bach Press) from the Council of Wisconsin Writers. The award goes to the Wisconsin author of the best book-length work of poetry in the year.

David L. Clark, emeritus professor of geology and geophysics, will receive the 2001 R.C. Moore Medal for Paleontology from the Society for Sedimentary Geology for outstanding contributions in paleontology.

Ron Dayne, former football player and Heisman Trophy winner, has been named the 1999-2000 UW male athlete of the year.

Leroy Dobson, Derek Popp and Lyle Reichmann, scientists from the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene’s Occupational Health section, won best poster honors at the American Industrial Hygiene Conference and Expo in May.
