Law school schedules public service day

August 28, 2000

The Law School will hold its second annual public service day Thursday, Aug. 31.

All 275 first-year law students will volunteer at a number of Dane County locations. They will collect prairie seeds, paint, lay carpeting, pull weeds and clean shorelines, among many other tasks.

“The event is about setting a tone for a career in law,” says Deborah Davidson, the law school’s assistant director for external relations. “It implants the seed that this is truly a service profession. The public service day is our first opportunity to inject that emphasis. While this is only our second year, we are already seeing the benefits.”

For example, Davidson says more than 30 second-year law students volunteered to lead this year’s service groups.

“They remember their service day as one of the most positive experiences of their first year,” she says.

The law school’s Class of 2002 will volunteer at the following locations from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.:

  • Picnic Point and Howard Temin Lakeshore Path, UW–Madison campus
