‘A Raisin in the Sun’ audition workshop set

Community members and UW–Madison students are invited to a free workshop to prepare for auditions for University Theatre’s fall production of “A Raisin in the Sun.”

University Theatre will present its revival of Lorraine Hansberry’s acclaimed play November 10-12 at the Wisconsin Union Theater. The cast will be primarily African-American; all roles are available with the exception of “Mama.”

“A Raisin in the Sun” will be directed by acclaimed theatre director, scholar and advocate Clinton Turner Davis, who will be a UW–Madison Arts Institute Interdisciplinary Artist in Residence this fall in the College of Letters & Science Departments of Theatre & Drama and Afro-American Studies. Davis will also teach a course titled “August Wilson: Playwright/Poet.”

“A Raisin in the Sun” will be presented as part of a weekend-long “Celebration of Black Theatre and Drama,” presented by the Departments of Afro-American Studies, Theatre & Drama and English, and the UW–Madison Arts Institute. Additional events include a panel presentation on Lorraine Hansberry’s contributions to black theater on Nov. 11.

The University Theatre production of “A Raisin in the Sun” is supported by the UW–Madison Weaver Fund, Brittingham Fund and Anonymous Fund. Additional “Celebration of Black Theatre and Drama” events are funded by the Evjue Foundation with the support of the UW–Madison Arts Institute and University of Wisconsin Foundation.
