Space Place leaders honored
The Madison Astronomical Society has named James Lattis and Kay Kriewald of UW–Madison’s Space Place as recipients of its Astronomy Education and Outreach Award for the year 2000.
The award, according to an announcement made by the society, is given in recognition of contributions to improving the public’s awareness of astronomy in Madison and Wisconsin.
Lattis, a co-founder and director of Space Place, has been instrumental in helping the center grow and develop since its establishment in 1990. Kriewald has served as the associate director for Space Place since 1995. Through Saturday morning family workshops, summer programs and other activities, Kriewald has helped thousands of area students and their parents gain a better appreciation for space, its exploration and astronomy.
Over the years, Space Place has become a “an important channel for bringing the wonder and excitement of astronomy and space exploration to Madison area adults and children…,” according to a statement issued by the society announcing the award to Lattis and Kriewald.
Located at 1605 S. Park St. in Madison, Space Place has become a focal point for drawing the community, public schools and Madison’s amateur astronomers together to promote knowledge and awareness of the universe.
Lattis and Kriewald will receive their award on Friday, April 14, at the Madison Astronomical Society’s annual banquet to be held at CJ’s Restaurant off Cottage Grove Road on Madison’s East Side.
