Acclaimed illustrator Heo to speak
Culturally conscious illustrator Yumi Heo will talk about her work at a lecture Wednesday, Nov. 10, at UW–Madison.
Born and raised in Korea, Heo arrived in New York 10 years ago. “The Lonely Lioness and the Ostrich Chicks: A Masai Tale,” which she illustrated in 1996, was named a New York Times Outstanding Illustrated Book. In addition, her artwork appears in “One Afternoon” and “Father’s Rubber Shoes,” as well as three traditional Korean tales, “The Rabbit’s Judgment,” “The Rabbit’s Escape” and “The Green Frogs.”
The lecture will be sponsored by the UW–Madison Cooperative Children’s Book Center, a children’s literature library for adults.
“She’s an achiever. She’s a successful book creator, recognized for excellence within the cultural context and beyond it. Her highly sophisticated illustrations compromise neither high artistic standards nor child appeal,” says CCBC director Ginny Moore Kruse.
Lecture co-sponsors include the School of Library and Information Studies; the Departments of Art and Curriculum and Instruction; Asian American Studies Program; East Asian Studies Program and International Institute in collaboration with the Friends of the CCBC, Tiger 2000: Committee for Korean/Korean American Studies and the Madison Metropolitan School District. The lecture will begin at 7 p.m. in L160 Elvehjem. For more information, contact the CCBC at (608) 263-3820.
