Regents honor Steinberg of UW Press
Elizabeth Steinberg, assistant director of the University of Wisconsin Press, is one of two recipients of the 1999 Regents Administrative and Professional Academic Staff Excellence Award for Outstanding Service.
She and Jim Jorstad, director of media services at UW-La Crosse, each will receive $5,000 to be used for professional development or to enhance a university program or function. The awards will be presented Friday, May 7, during the Board of Regents meeting at UW-Parkside.
Steinberg joined the staff of the UW Press in 1961 as assistant editor. She became associate editor in 1964 and chief editor in 1966, prior to assuming her present position in 1986.
David Bethea, interim director of the press, nominated her for the award. “Betty Steinberg is, for me, the `soul’ of the University of Wisconsin Press,” says Bethea. “She is an utter professional [who] cares passionately about the quality of what we produce.” He described the award as “a fitting capstone to a career that has meant a great deal to many at this university and beyond.”
