Greenpeace founder to lecture today

Patrick Moore, a founding member of Greenpeace, will give the Roddis Lecture today (May 3) at 3:30 p.m. at the State Historical Society auditorium on the UW–Madison campus. His speech is entitled “Environmentalism for the 21st Century.” A reception will follow the lecture. The event is free and open to the public.

Moore served for nine years as president of Greenpeace Canada and seven years as a director of Greenpeace International. In 1991 he founded Greenspirit, a consultancy focusing on environmental policy and public involvement in the resource and energy sectors.

As chair of the Forest Practices Committee of the Forest Alliance of British Columbia, Moore now advocates for “sustainable forestry,” and balancing social and economic issues as well as environmental issues in making forest management decisions. Moore includes large-scale clearcutting as one management option in sustainable forestry, which has put him at odds with many environmental groups.

The Hamilton Roddis Memorial Lecture Series is sponsored by the UW–Madison Department of Forest Ecology and Management, in cooperation with the Hamilton Roddis Foundation.

The lectures honor the late Hamilton Roddis, who served as secretary, president, and chairman of the board of the Roddis Plywood Corporation for more than 60 years.
