Two Badgers garner Big Ten awards
Sophomore LaTonya Sims and freshman Jessie Stomski of the women’s basketball team have been voted all-Big Ten by both the coaching and media panels according to an announcement Friday at the Big Ten Tournament in Indianapolis.
Sims, a 6-3 forward from Racine, was named to the first team by the media and to the second team by the coaches.
Stomski, a 6-3 forward from Oakdale, Minn., was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year by both panels. It is the second year in a row that a Wisconsin player has won the honor. Sims won it last year.
Stomski was also named second team all-Big Ten by the media and received an honorable mention recognition by the coaches.
Sims leads the Badgers in scoring and rebounding this year with 17.3 points and 6.5 rebounds a game. She ranks fourth in the conference in scoring.
Stomski was the only Big Ten player named to the Women’s Basketball News Service’s All-College Freshmen national team. The 6-3 forward, who has started since the fifth game of the season, earned third team honors on the 15-player roster.
Stomski, the Badgers’ second leading scorer and rebounder with 15.2 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, is also the only freshman among the top 10 in conference scoring. She has hit double figures in all but three games and set UW’s freshman scoring record with 395 points, breaking the old record of 392 points set last year by Sims.
