Witte named director of La Follette Institute
A professor whose family has been linked to UW–Madison for four generations has been named director of the Robert M. La Follette Institute of Public Affairs.
John Witte, a professor of political science and public affairs, will take over the position June 1 from Donald F. Kettl, who has served as director for three years. Kettl remains on the faculty of both the institute and the political science department.
“Witte is an ideal choice to head La Follette,” said Philip Certain, dean of the College of Letters and Science. “He brings both the depth of Wisconsin experience and the widely recognized qualities of a distinguished scholar to the job.”
Witte said: “I am excited to take over the direction of the La Follette Institute at such an important time. Our expansion into international public affairs, as well as our continued excellent research, teaching and outreach, make it a wonderful opportunity. And Professor Kettl is leaving us in excellent shape in our relationship with the university and the legislature.”
Witte graduated from UW–Madison in 1968. His grandfather, parents, wife and a son also attended the university in either Madison or Milwaukee. Witte joined the faculty at UW–Madison in 1977. He has served as associate director of the La Follette Institute, both currently and from 1985-86. He also served as associate chair of the political science department from 1987-1990.
Witte teaches public policy ethics, the policymaking process, democratic theory, and budget and tax policy. He has helped evaluate the Milwaukee School Choice Program and his forthcoming book is based on that research.
