Three faculty named AAAS fellows

Three members of the faculty have been named fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

David L. DeMets, a professor of biostatistics and medical informatics; Ivan Rayment, a professor of biochemistry; and Phillip S. Myers, a professor of mechanical engineering were among 283 new fellows selected by AAAS, the world’s largest federation of scientific and engineering societies.

Fellows are selected for their efforts to advance science or toward fostering applications deemed scientifically or socially distinguished.

DeMets is widely recognized for his work as a clinical trials specialist, helping to ensure the statistical validity of biomedical research. Myers, now an emeritus professor, is an authority on the internal combustion engine and was a highly regarded teacher in the UW–Madison College of Engineering. Rayment is a crystallographer and molecular biologist, and is internationally recognized for his work to decipher the structure of myosin, the molecular key to how muscles work.

Established in 1848, AAAS has more than 144,000 members and publishes the weekly, peer-reviewed journal Science.
