Memorial service set for Gornick, Lundelius
UW–Madison will hold a combined memorial service on Wednesday, Nov. 4 for two UW–Madison students who died last week.
Sarah Gornick, 20, died at Meriter Hospital of bacterial meningitis Oct. 27. Jason Lundelius, 21, also died Oct. 27 in Chicago of injuries he received in a summer biking accident. He had been in a coma for more than two months.
Dean of Students Mary Rouse says both families are very interested in taking every possible step to help the students’ friends heal. “The families also want to thank our students for their support during this painful time,” Rouse said. “Sarah and Jason were exceptionally talented people. They were gifted academically, athletically and socially. They were informal leaders among their peers.”
Gornick, a junior from St. Paul, had been majoring in biochemistry. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority and the UW–Madison women’s varsity lightweight crew team. Lundelius, a senior from Chicago, was a member of the men’s crew team. He had been majoring in English.
The Nov. 4 memorial will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the Alumni Lounge of the Pyle Center (formerly the Wisconsin Center), 702 Langdon St.
The Gornick family has established a scholarship fund in Sarah’s name for a member of the women’s lightweight crew team. Contributions may be made through the UW Foundation, Sarah Gornick Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 8860, Madison, Wis., 53708.
The Lundelius family has established a scholarship fund in Jason’s name for students at his high school, St. John’s Military Academy, 1101 N. Genesse St., Delafield, Wis., 53018.
