Commission seeks community input on Greek life

March 20, 1998

A UW–Madison group examining the future of fraternities and sororities on campus is asking for input from the community.

The Commission on Fraternities and Sororities, formed in 1988 to examine the relationship between Greek organizations and the university, was given the charge to begin the review last fall by Dean of Students Mary Rouse.

The commission is evaluating the implementation of 13 recommendations made in 1989 regarding the restructuring of the relationship between the university and fraternities and sororities.

The group has set up a number of opportunities for faculty, staff, students and community members to participate in the discussion of Greek life at the university. Scheduled events as part of “Greek Life in the 21st Century: Your Chance to Make a Difference” include:

  • A focus group with the National Pan-Hellenic Council, the governing body of historically African American fraternities and sororities, March 22 , A1 Gordon Commons, noon.
  • Two town hall open hearings, March 24 and 31, Memorial Union, 6:30 p.m.
  • A brown bag lunch with Dr. Robert Deloian, national president of Phi Delta Theta, to discuss that fraternity’s movement toward substance-free housing, April 1, Memorial Union, 11:30 a.m.
  • Focus groups to consider specific issues raised during the town hall hearings, April 7, 8, and 15, 1641 Humanities, 6:30 p.m., and April 9, Memorial Union, 6:30 p.m.

All of the events are open to the public.
