Outreach grants awarded for education and technology projects

More than $300,000 has been awarded by the Office of Outreach Development to enhance education and technology projects. The following proposals have been funded:

• “Mosquitoes in the Classroom, Model for K-12,” $34,203, Linda Shriberg, Office of Education Outreach, and Frances Spray, Department of Medical Genetics, will develop curriculum and conduct workshops for Wisconsin teachers about using Internet technology to communicate with Puerto Rican schools, concentrating on a mosquito-control program in place there.
• “Internet-Based Learning for Java Programming,” $50,000, Thomas W. Smith, Engineering Professional Development, and Susan Horwitz, Computer Science, will develop a course to be delivered by EPD in both credit and noncredit versions.
• “Implement a Program Delivery Model Using the World Wide Web-Based Technology, Real Audio,” $19,100, Stephen Douglas, School of Nursing, will assist content development and delivery to a target audience, followed by evaluation of the program’s effectiveness for state registered nurses.
• “Certificate Program in Human Services Administration,” $50,000, Roger Williams, Division of Continuing Studies, will develop a noncredit certificate program in human services administration to replace a supervisory program previously conducted by the Department of Health and Social Services.
• “Native Storytelling in Cyberspace,” $50,000, Shiela Reaves, Division of Continuing Studies, will forge new partnerships among Continuing Studies, American Indian Studies and native educators of grades 8-14 by creating Internet courses and on-reservation workshops about storytelling, writing and community journalism; establishing a Teacher Link web site; and providing students with an on-line newspaper for the native educational communities.
• “Camp Badger Exploring Engineering Summer Program,” $22,500, Phil O’Leary, Paul Ross and Steve Zwickel, Engineering Professional Development; Chris Gallagher, Division of Continuing Studies; and Roger Maclean, Office of Education Outreach, will fund a one-week, in-residence summer education program for 25 students in grades 7-9 and three middle school teachers.
