Nominations sought for two vice provost positions

The campus community is invited to make nominations or apply for two vice provost positions in the Office of the Provost.

Given the nature of the responsibilities, the positions of vice provost for faculty and staff and vice provost for teaching and learning are both limited to faculty with tenure on the UW–Madison campus.

The deadline for applications and nominations for both positions is Monday, March 31.  

Professor Steve Stern will be returning to his faculty position full time after serving as vice provost for faculty and staff since 2008. His position in the Provost’s office is one of the rotating vice provost positions held by tenured faculty for terms of three to five years.  

The search committee is chaired by Steve Cramer, associate dean and professor, College of Engineering, civil & environmental, and also includes Catharine DeRubeis, human resources specialist-senior, Office of Human Resources; Dorothy Farrar-Edwards Professor, School of Education, kinesiology; Bob Hamers, professor, College of Letters & Science, chemistry; Caroline Levine, professor, College of Letters and Science, English; Rick Moss, associate dean and professor, School of Medicine and Public Health, cell and regenerative biology; Cynthia Paine, assistant to the provost, Office of the Provost; Jeff Shokler, associate director, Undergraduate Advising.

Professor Christopher Olsen has been serving as interim vice provost for teaching and learning, completing the term previously held by Professor Aaron Brower. Olsen will be returning to his faculty position. The vice provost for teaching and learning position also is a rotating vice provost position held by tenured faculty for terms of three to five years.

The search committee is chaired by Kathy Cramer, professor College of Letters and Science, political science and also includes Rick Gourse, professor, College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, bacteriology; Linda Jorn, director of academic technology, Division of Information Technology; Kurt Kuehne, student representative; Jonathan Martin, professor, College of Letters and Science, atmospheric and oceanic studies; Mary Beth Meyerand, professor, School of Medicine and Public Health, medical physics, department chair, biomedical engineering; Kevin Niemi, outreach program manager, Center for Biology Education; Rebecca Schulman, student representative; Wren Singer, director of Undergraduate Advising, academic advising; Ed Van Gemert, vice provost for libraries, university librarian.

The nomination process is critical to developing a strong pool of applicants as these are both positions that provide leadership and guidance in a number of areas that are key to UW–Madison’s commitment to academic excellence and innovation.
