Conference Explores Transnationalism and Cultural Exchange Feb. 6-7

The Border Studies Research Circle, recently formed at UW–Madison to foster interdisciplinary dialogue, will host two campus conferences, one Feb. 6-7 on “Transnationalism, Travel and Desire” and another March 20-21 on “Transnationalism, Creolization and the Cultural Politics of Encounter.”

Both conferences will pair two outside speakers with a panel of UW–Madison faculty presenters. On the second day a student-organized discussion will be held with the conference speakers. All sessions are open to the public without charge.

The Feb. 6-7 conference will feature talks by Joseph Boone of the University of Southern California on “Acting Out in Alexandria: Travel Notes from Egypt” and by Inderpal Grewal of San Francisco State University on “Women’s Rights as Human Rights: Feminist Practices and Human Rights Regimes in Transnationality.” UW–Madison presenters will be Kirin Narayan of Anthropology, Rudy Koshar of History, V. N. Rao of South Asian Studies and James Moy of Theatre and Drama.

The Border Studies Research Circle was created to encourage dialogue among faculty and graduate students interested in intercultural exchange and transnational cultural traffic. Represented are anthropology, history, area studies, comparative literature and other programs.
