The UW School of Veterinary Medicine and UW Veterinary Care, the school’s veterinary medical teaching hospital, will host an open house on Sunday, April 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The event will introduce the public to the research and instruction stemming from the school as well as the many services available through UW Veterinary Care. The open house is being held in conjunction with UW-Madison Science Expeditions, a three-day, campuswide event that allows the public to experience and discover science.
Through 23 interactive booths, 13 lectures, and other opportunities, open house visitors will have the chance to:
- Meet unusual and exotic animals, from alpacas and fainting goats to turtles and tarantulas
- Take a tour of UW Veterinary Care
- Find out what it takes to get into veterinary medical school
- Meet the PetPals, dogs that visit patients at the UW Children’s Hospital
- Learn about many areas of veterinary medicine, including animal dentistry, cardiology, neurology, oncology, pathology, and more
- Explore research on influenza and West Nile virus
- Get an “inside look” at animals through an arthroscope and an endoscope
- See how pet microchipping works
- Interact with animal skeletons through lessons in comparative anatomy
The open house will also include special demonstrations, featuring:
- Pet first aid
- The UW–Madison Police Canine Unit
- Pet teeth brushing
Children are encouraged to bring a stuffed animal to have its “heart” radiographed or its “injuries” bandaged or sutured.
The hospital and school are located at 2015 Linden Drive on the west end of the UW–Madison campus. Parking is available in Lot 62, north of the building across Linden Drive. A map and directions can be found here.
