UW-Madison ranks high in study of university research output

A ranking of the research productivity of 500 research universities around the world placed University of Wisconsin–Madison at No. 22, based on the quantity and quality of research studies published.

The  2012 Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities, produced by National Taiwan University, placed the Wisconsin flagship seventh in agriculture, eighth in agricultural science, 13th in math, and 15th in environment/ecology.

The ranking, formerly published as HEEACT by the Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan, compensates for university staff size, to reduce the inherent bias at larger institutions.

To allow newer institutions to compete, half of the total score derives from publications in the past two years. The rankings do not reflect expert opinion, and are not designed as overall evaluation of the universities, but rather on the size and importance of their scientific output.
