UW-Madison police win accreditation from a third agency
The University of Wisconsin–Madison Police Department this month became the only law enforcement agency in Wisconsin to be accredited by three different agencies.
The International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA) awards accreditation to college and university sworn law enforcement agencies and has a standards manual that contains 203 standards.
The group has accredited 34 law enforcement agencies, 33 in the U.S. and one in Canada, and an additional 11 agencies are seeking accreditation.
The standards for achieving accreditation from IACLEA ensure the police agency has a system of professional practices in the areas of administration, crime prevention, investigations, property and evidence control, and many others.
This latest achievement goes along with two previous accreditations earned by the department.
In March 2011, the department won accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement (CALEA). And in May 2012, the department was awarded state level accreditation by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Accreditation Group (WILEAG).
The department is required to submit annual reports to the accreditation agency to show continued compliance with the accreditation standards. The CALEA and WILEAG accreditations are valid for three years and the IACLEA award runs for four years.
