Centennial celebration of the Camp Randall Arch is June 30

The Camp Randall Memorial Arch, located where West Dayton Street meets Randall Avenue, was dedicated in 1912 in remembrance of the 70,000 troops who trained at Camp Randall during the Civil War.

On Saturday, June 30, a rededication ceremony will be held underneath the arch in celebration of its centennial. From 10:30 to 11 a.m., the 1st Brigade Band will perform, followed by the ceremony at 11 a.m.

Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary John Scocos will deliver remarks, and there will be a musical interlude performed by the 1^st Brigade Band. Alan Hembel of the Sons of Union Civil War Veterans and Grand Army of the Republic Post No. 8 will also speak.

Lance Herdegen, a noted author and chair of the Wisconsin CW150 Commission to commemorate the Civil War sesquicentennial, will deliver the keynote address.

In a separate ceremony scheduled for 12:30 p.m., the three Detached Tents of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War will rededicate a stone bench in Camp Randall Memorial Park that was first dedicated in September 1937, nearly 75 years ago.

Grand Army of the Republic Post No. 8 plans to camp in the park on Friday night. Re-enactors of the era are encouraged to attend in period costume. A recreation of the photo taken at the dedication of the arch in 1912 will be taken sometime during the weekend.
