Police seek information on December downtown attack; release sketch
University of Wisconsin–Madison and city of Madison police are urging members of the campus community to consider their own personal safety, especially while out at late at night or returning from libraries or study spots.
A police sketch of the attacker.
A 19-year-old woman was knocked down after being punched two to three times in the face around 4 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 21 on North Carroll Street. The victim screamed just as a car approached. It distracted her assailant, and she was able to run to safety.
She suffered facial injuries, and was checked out by Madison Fire Department paramedics. She had been walking on Langdon Street prior to turning on North Carroll Street.
Police produced a sketch of the attacker this week, because the victim had been out of state since the crime took place.
The suspect is described by Madison Police as male, possibly Hispanic, light complexion, 5-feet, 7 inches tall, in his 20s, with a medium build, short black “buzz cut”-style hair, clean shaven, well groomed, wearing a black wool coat similar to a pea coat, and dark jeans.
General personal safety tips include:
- Never walk alone, particularly at night.
- Carry a cell phone and dial 911 for help.
- Campus and downtown are part of a growing city. Use your instincts and common sense as your first defense.
- If you plan to drink, do so in moderation to avoid putting yourself in a position of increased risk.
- Walk with a friend whenever possible.
- Take advantage of UW–Madison SAFEwalk and SAFEride programs available on and around campus. Call 262-5000 for detailed information.
- Be aware of places along your path of travel that could conceal a criminal (shrubbery, building recesses, etc.). Avoid or keep a distance from these areas whenever possible.
- Make sure someone knows when you leave and when to expect you back.
- If you think someone is following you, cross the street. Head for a well-populated and well-lit area at night.
Anyone with information about the case should call Madison Area Crime Stoppers at 266-6014. Callers can remain anonymous.
