Top investigative reporter, national business editor to visit campus

A Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter and a national business editor who has guided coverage of the financial crisis will visit campus this fall as writers in residence.

Jeff Gottlieb, a senior writer at The Los Angeles Times, will speak to journalism and political science classes during the week of Oct. 30 as the Public Affairs Writer in Residence.

Earlier this year, Gottlieb and colleague Ruben Vives’ coverage of a corruption scandal in Bell, Calif., received the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service, the George Polk Award, the Investigative Reporters and Editors top prize, the Selden Ring Award, the American Society of News Editors’ Distinguished Writing Award for Local Accountability Reporting and the Los Angeles Press Club’s 2011 Public Service Award.

Gottlieb has also worked for the San Jose Mercury News, Los Angeles Herald Examiner, Riverside Press Enterprise and Sports Illustrated.

While at the Mercury News, Gottlieb received his first George Polk Award for reporting on Stanford University’s questionable spending of federal research funds, which led to the resignation of Stanford’s president and Congressional hearings. He was also a member of the staff that received the Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the 1989 earthquake.

Gottlieb received a bachelor’s degree from Pitzer College in Claremont, Calif., and a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University.

Rick Green, a senior editor of U.S. finance for Bloomberg News, will visit journalism and business classes as the Business Writer in Residence during the week of Nov. 6.

In recent years, Green has had a hand in editing Bloomberg’s coverage of banks, investment houses, the credit card industry, and in particular of the banks and insurers during the 2008 financial crisis.

He has also worked as the U.S. banking/insurance team leader at Bloomberg, assistant managing editor at Newsday, senior editor at BusinessWeek and senior editor of SmartMoney.

Green is a graduate of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
