UW-Madison ranks highly in two magazines’ assessments

Two magazines  — Washington Monthly and Reform Judaism — have ranked the University of Wisconsin–Madison highly in separate rankings.

Washington Monthly magazine weighed in with rankings of colleges across the nation, ranking the University of Wisconsin–Madison 29^th in its annual survey.

The only Big Ten university ranking higher than UW–Madison in the magazine’s survey was the University of Michigan, which came in at No. 10 in the category of “national universities.”

And, Reform Judaism has UW–Madison among its “Top 60 School Jews Choose.” UW–Madison ranked 11^th among public institutions in that survey and fourth-ranked in the Big Ten, behind Penn State, Michigan and Indiana.

The magazine takes into account the number of Jewish students in the overall student population, the number Jewish studies courses, the presence of Jewish fraernities, sororities and events and worship opportunities for students.

Washington Monthly’s  “2011 College Rankings” issue employs a methodology that assesses three areas.

Those areas include “social mobility,” which takes into account percentage of students receiving Pell Grants and graduation rates; research, which takes into account research expenditures and bachelor’s-to-doctorate rank, and; service, which examines several community service measures.
