UW-Madison remains high in global ranking

The University of Wisconsin–Madison was ranked 19th among world universities in an annual survey done by Shanghai’s Jiao Tong University.

UW-Madison is one of only six American public universities to measure among the top 20 and the highest in the Big Ten. The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor ranked 22^nd.

UW-Madison had been ranked 17^th for the past two years.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities, which has been done annually since 2003, uses research performance, such as alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers and papers published in Nature and Science, and other measures to rank the world’s top higher education institutions

This year, the top five institutions were Harvard University, Stanford University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Cambridge.

Institutions in the United States dominate the rankings, with eight universities in the top 10 and more than half of the universities in the top 100.
